The Pearl Island development is in the Pearl Archipelago just minutes by air from Panama City. This collection of 227 islands is largely uninhabited with the chief industries being deep sea fishing and sport fishing by tourists. The third largest island in the Pearls is Pedro Gonzalez, which has one small fishing village, 737 species of fish and 15 species of coral in the surrounding waters, 150 species of birds, 16 species of mammals, and 20 species of lizards, amphibians, and crocodiles. Panama is a seasonal breeding ground whales and five species including the humpback are regularly seen in the waters around the Pearl Island development from June through December. In short the Pearl Island development on Pedro Gonzalez is located in a true tropical island paradise.

What is refreshing and exciting is the dedication of the developers to create an “authentic private island destination” with a “particular respect for nature and heritage” to quote the folks at Pearl Island. This pristine destination with its 14 private beaches is being developed as a private island enclave. Sustainability of the island bio-diversity and total natural environment will receive unprecedented attention as Pearl Island integrates luxury residential living, service, and design into this pristine setting.

The long term plan for Pearl Island is a range of residences, villas, and facilities that will provide luxurious living while preserving 75% of the land on Pedro Gonzalez Island. With a wide range of activities and relaxation options available Pearl Island aims to provide residents with the utmost in private island living. The project is starting with a limited number of hotel suites and residences on the Northern Zancadilla Peninsula.

A limited number of hotel suites and residences are being developed on Peninsula Zancadilla as part of the first phase of Pearl Island, fully integrated with the island’s natural environment and offering residents and guests the unique opportunity to live an authentic private island experience.

On an idyllic island in the tropical waters offshore from Panama lies Pearl Island. This development lies among the 227 islands of the Pearl Archipelago. The lodge will have a central reception area, a sunset deck and bar, recreational facilities, and twenty-four stand alone suites. Zoniro Lodge on Pearl Island could be a self contained experience with its tennis courts, spa, billiards room, kids’ club but that will not be the point of coming to Pearl Island.

The Pearl Island development is on the third largest island in the Pearl Archipelago, Pedro Gonzalez. This island should be the photo in the encyclopedia entry for tropical paradise. It has over 700 species of fish in the surrounding waters and more than a dozen species of coral providing residents and visitors with spectacular scuba diving. Like Panama itself, Pearl Island is a birder’s paradise with 150 different species. The island has 16 species of mammal and 20 of various lizards, amphibians, and crocodiles. It lies in the seasonal breeding ground for the Humpback and other whale species.

The beauty of the Pearl Island development is its development plan aiming for a sustainable integration with the untouched 75% of the island with the residences, villas, and support facilities that will be strategically places across the island to take advantage of its natural beauty, 14 beaches, and intimate privacy.

In addition to the Zoniro Lodge a select number of villas and lots will be offered for sale in the project’s first phase.

A Visit to Saboga Island

Posted by Mike March - 10 - 2010 - Wednesday ADD COMMENTS

As you approach the island from the sea, it is not possible to see the town clearly.  It is covered by coconut palm trees and jungle.  The island’s population is at the East side of the island. There are usually roads and sidewalks between their houses.

 A Visit to Saboga Island

At the largest beach at the entrance of the town, Puerto Nuevo, there is a shipyard still in use. It is not visited that often. We can also find a church, which is visible from the sea, at the top of a hill. This is one of the oldest churches in the whole American continent still in use. There is a nice sea view from there. It is a great place to visit.
There are paths that take you from the town to the beach. These beaches are very quiet and beautiful. You can find a beach by walking 15 minutes from the town. Some villagers offer guide services in case you need it.

Panama Pearl Islands A Visit to Saboga Island

Small ships owners are available for trips or tours if you request it. They know the whole area well and know of desert islands and beaches that are a good place to go snorkeling. If you don’t have the required equipment you can always pass by a store located in Contadora Island and get everything you need.

There is a small restaurant in the town in which they offer Pearl Islands-style food, although you have the option to go eat at any of the restaurants or hotels in Contadora.  There are neither hotels nor lodging facilities available in Saboga, but is possible to rent a room or a small house that includes its own mini-kitchen. It might cost you around $20.00 a day. If you prefer to go camping, you can do that near the beach or on the outskirts of the town.

Isla Del Rey (King Island)

Posted by Mike February - 10 - 2010 - Wednesday ADD COMMENTS

Isla Del Rey (King Island) is one of the Pearl Islands, located in the Gulf of Panama. It is the biggest island of this group and second in the Panamanian Pacific Ocean to Coiba Island. It is approximately 74,000 acres (232 square kilometers) in size. It has lush and varied foliage.

There are numerous rivers and several natural water springs. The surrounding sea is pristine with many marine animal species, whales, dolphins and turtles among them. Fishing is a very popular activity in this area for both locals and visitors.

Panama Pearl Islands2 Isla Del Rey (King Island)

Isla del Rey is approximately 60 nautical miles from Panama City. It takes 5 minutes to get there by plane and 30 minutes by sea.

This island was visited by Vasco Nunez de Balboa (discoverer of the South Sea) in 1513. He was the first European to visit during his first expedition to the Pacific Ocean.  Although he could not get close enough to the island to land, he named the island Isla Rica. Nobody knows when its name changed, but most likely it was called Isla Del Rey after Jesus Christ.

There are several populated areas on the island, but San Jose, at the North, is the biggest one. This island has long and beautiful white sand beaches where you can appreciate marine fauna and flora.

Today, there are areas for sale. There are residential and tourist projects, some of which are beachfront.

San Jose Island

San Jose Island is one of the Pearl Islands located in the Pacific Ocean near the continental shelf. It is the second largest island of this group after Isla Del Rey (king Island). It is in the middle of the Gulf of Panama and is 90 kilometers away from Panama City. It takes around 3 hours to get there if you take a boat, and around 20 minutes by plane. Its area is approximately 14,000 acres and it has tropical forests and beaches.

The sea surrounding the island might be up to 9,000 ft deep. The area offers an excellent environment for fishing, and as this water is clear, it is appropriate to practice snorkel and scuba diving. There are over 50 beaches in the island, plenty of coral reefs and lush foliage. San Jose island beaches stretch over an area of approximately 3 kilometers.
You can find many rivers and other natural sources of pure water such as springs, which supply the island with water all the year long. There are natural caves and natural water springs that may be up to 60 meters high. There is a pleasant temperature all the time; it varies between 18 degrees to 33 Celsius degrees, with an average temperature of 26 Celsius degrees.

Due to the fact that there are many sources of water all the year, the island’s vegetation is quite diverse, with a very fertile soil that allows crops to grow. A great selection of birds and mammals live in the island.

Saboga Island

Posted by Mike January - 23 - 2010 - Saturday ADD COMMENTS

Saboga Island is located on the north side of Pearl islands.  It is almost 3 square kilometers in size and has a population of 680 inhabitants according to a year 2000 census. The population tends to stay small due to the fact that there is only elementary schooling on the island. Most parents send their children to Panama City so that they can continue their education. Many of the children later decide to live in the city instead of the island. However, some come back during the vacation period, populating the island again, at least for a short period of time.

Panama Pearl Islands4 300x225 Saboga Island

Unlike Contadora Island, which is quite near, most of Saboga’s natural beauty remains untouched. Curiously, Saboga Island was populated before Contadora, but the hotel’s construction and the landing strip changed everything. People from Saboga could get a job in Contadora’s construction projects and tourism industry, which helped a lot with their economical and social development.

Today, the construction of a bar-restaurant is taking place at Puerto Nuevo, which is the main beach at the entrance of the town. This is expected to increase tourism activities on the island. This project will be managed only by the community, which will surely result in benefits for the whole population.
Panama Pearl Islands5 Saboga Island

Other residential and tourism projects are currently being developed by the private sector. This may completely change the island’s people lifestyle. Although not many tourists visit the island, some come occasionally from Contadora Island just to get to know Saboga Island.

Survivor Places Panama’s Pearl Islands on World Stage

Posted by Mike April - 13 - 2009 - Monday ADD COMMENTS

One of Panama’s better kept secrets is the breathtaking Pearl Islands just off its Pacific coast in the Gulf of Panama. The pristine setting was recently the location of choice for the immensely popular “Survivor” television series on CBS.

Producers say that when scouts reported on the riches of the Pearl Islands, the destination was immediately slated for use as a backdrop. When production of “Survivor: Pearl Islands” wrapped, the allure of the islands called the cast and crew back for a second round of production called “Survivor: All Stars.”

Borrowing from a plot twist developed for “Survivor: Palau”, one Pearl Island was chosen to act as the dreaded “Exile Island”. Each week, one castaway would be banished to Exile Island for a night alone. The exile would be given a flint, a machete, a cooking pot, and a single jug of unsanitized water, the rest was up to them.

The show’s producers hid an “Immunity Idol” on Exile Island. The exiled Castaway had just one night to find it while making arrangements to survive their ordeal. If found in time, the Immunity Idol could be exchanged for immunity should their fellow castaways elect to vote them out of the game at tribal council.

Contestans of Survivor: Pearl Islands

The rules of the Survivor game played out in the Pearl Islands began with 16 players being divided into four “Tribes”. The divisions of these tribes followed some familiar lines. Older men formed one team. Younger men were segregated to form another. The same logic was applied to older and younger women as well. The structure of the teams was carefully chosen to highlight the contrasting benefits of the wisdom of age versus the vitality of youth.

At first, teams battled other teams for the right to exist. As the game progressed, players began to face other players in one on one combat. In the end, Aras Baskauskas prevailed against all odds, to become the Sole Survivor.

You’ll find that your trip to the Pearl Islands will require very little in the way of survival skills. The Pearls offer a wide range of hospitality options. You will find breathtaking natural beauty, limitless aquatic adventures, and the shopping, restaurants, golf, and entertainment you have come to expect from a world class destination.
